Design Perspectives: Marble or Quartz?

At House of Wynn Interiors, marble is often our first choice. It is one of the most beautiful materials to work with and has a timeless quality that is difficult to replicate. Every slab has its own veining, colour and movement, bringing warmth, depth and individuality to a scheme. No two pieces are ever quite the same, which is part of what makes it feel so special.

Marble does require a little more care than quartz, but for us, that is part of its charm. It is a natural material that changes gently over time, developing a patina through everyday use. Rather than seeing this as a flaw, we see it as part of the story of a home - adding character and a sense of authenticity.

That said, marble is not always the most practical option. As a softer, more porous stone, it can be more susceptible to staining, scratching and etching if it is not cared for properly. Regular sealing, wiping up spills promptly, using chopping boards and trivets, and avoiding harsh cleaning products will all help preserve its beauty for years to come. It asks a little more of you, but we feel the rewards are worth it.

Quartz offers something quite different. It is engineered for durability, highly resistant to stains and scratches, and requires very little maintenance. It is also often more affordable than marble. Advances in manufacturing mean that many quartz surfaces now have a convincing natural-stone appearance, making them a very practical choice for busy homes.

For families who want a low-maintenance surface, quartz can be an excellent option. However, for clients drawn to natural materials and happy to embrace the individuality that comes with them, marble remains difficult to beat.

Ultimately, the right choice depends on how you live and what matters most to you. Our role is to help clients weigh up the practicalities, but if a client is able to accommodate the care marble requires, it is usually the material we are most pleased to recommend. Its beauty, individuality and enduring character bring something to a home that feels genuinely personal.
